METHODS

In participation processes various different methods of involving people are usually employed. None of these guarantees that a participation process will succeed; but such methods can contribute significantly to

• conducting participation processes in a structured and efficient way, 
• providing variety and interest, and 
• tracking down new solutions away from well-trodden paths.

Which method is appropriate?

By now there are many different methods to promote participation. Which method makes the most sense for a given participation process depends (among other things) on

• the number of participants expected / desired,
• how much time is available, and
• the “depth of participation“ – i.e. whether the process is one of >> information, consultation or joint decision.

It may make sense to combine more than one method, or to employ isolated components of a given method. Selecting the method(s) to be used can form part of the participation process. >> Facilitators will be glad to assist and advise you in selecting the most suitable method for your participation process.
